TelevisaUnivision owns Univision, a free Spanish-language TV network in the US. It's the biggest provider of Spanish-language programming in the U.S. This network's programming includes telenovelas and other dramas, sports, sitcoms, reality and variety shows, news, and imported Spanish-language films. Univision's principal studios, production facilities, and business activities are in Doral, Florida, although the company's headquarters are in Midtown Manhattan (near Miami).
Univision is on most U.S. pay TV providers. The network has local stations in 60 Latino-populated markets. Most of these stations also air local newscasts and other local programs. In New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami, the network's owned-and-operated stations' local newscasts are as competitive as their English-language equivalents.
Univision's programming
Univision's 164-hour network programming schedule was established. The network's base programming feed broadcasts general entertainment on a 24-hour schedule each weekday, beginning at 5:00 a.m. Eastern and Pacific Time and continuing until 5:00 a.m. on weekends (although the first three hours of the secondary weekend schedule on Saturday mornings are occupied by "Planeta U").
Informational commercials occupy weekend slots (prior to 2013, the network had programmed a full 168-hour schedule, with reruns of past Televisa-produced entertainment programs filling the two hours on Saturday and Sundays now occupied by paid programming).
Many of Univision's owned-and-operated stations and affiliates develop their own local content. Newscasts and public affairs shows are examples (the production of local infotainment programming and the leasing of brokered programs such as direct response and religious content is up to the discretion of the station).
Some Univision stations may carry weekday morning newscasts (mostly li) and minimal local news programs Monday through Friday evenings.
The master stream includes alternative programming that news may pre-empt during these times (as well as others in which stations carry additional local programs). Univision stations carry little local news early and late at night. Monday's busy
Univision airs mostly Televisa telenovelas and programs. Most of these shows first aired on Televisa's flagship network in Mexico, Canal de las Estrellas. Before 2009, Univision aired Venevision telenovelas and other programming.
Univision produces a moderate amount of original programming, including reality competition series Nuestra Belleza Latina, La Banda, and Mi Pongo Mi Pie; national news programming; entertainment news shows El Gordo y La Flaca and Sal y pimienta; and sports discussion program Repblica Deportiva ("Sports Republic").
Univision Studios produces television shows. Univision's parent company created this business in 2009 to produce original content for the network.
The variety show Sabado Gigante, hosted by Don Francisco, aired on Univision every Saturday night from April 12, 1986 to September 19, 2015 (its final episode aired live in the U.S., Mexico, and Chile, where it originated in 1962). From September 2004 to May 2015, Univision aired Clásicos de Sábado Gigante ("Giant Saturday Classics"), an early Sunday morning program consisting of condensed episodes of Sabado Gigante.
Univision continued the Saturday evening variety tradition after Sabado Gigante ended after 29 years by shifting the Televisa-produced Sabadazo into Gigante's previous time slot on October 17, 2015, before reverting to an afternoon slot and being replaced by Crónicas.
Sabadazo had been airing on Saturday afternoons since the show moved from TeleFutura (now UniMás) in September 2012, but now Univision is one of only two American networks to air the first-run program during prime time on Saturdays (CBS is the only other, although ABC, Fox and occasionally NBC broadcast live sporting events during Saturday prime on certain weeks of the year).
Univision afternoons feature drama and variety shows (telenovelas that appeal to teen or pre-teen audiences previously aired on early Saturday afternoons until 2011). Univision's weekend programming consists mainly of scripted series and variety shows, such as "Bailando por un Sueo," "Como Dice el Dicho," and "El Chavo Animado" ("El Chavo: The Animated Series"). In 2007, when the first episode of Nuestra Belleza Latina aired, the network began to emphasize reality programming ("Our Latin Beauty").
The network has only acquired rights to two Televisa comedy since 2008 (Durmiendo con mi Jefe and Todo en Incluido, both of which began airing in 2014), but it continues to air comedies that are no longer in production for which Univision maintains U.S. distribution rights. The network once aired many sitcoms.
In contrast to UniMás and Telemundo, which air Spanish-dubbed copies of English-language films (although Telemundo also airs Mexican-produced films), the network airs some feature films, although its reliance on them has diminished since 2009. These are 1960s-1980s Mexican imports.
They air on weekends when football and reality shows aren't on. Univision filled the 10:00 p.m. (Eastern and Pacific Time) hour Monday through Friday with various shows (including Cristina, Don Francisco Presenta, the newsmagazine Aqui y Ahora, and Televisa-produced sitcoms and sketch comedies). This tradition persisted until September 2009, when telenovelas took over.
