The budget for the first season was US$40million.

Filming began at Ashford Studios, Ireland, in July 2012. It was a brand-new facility at the time. The location was chosen because of its scenic beauty and tax advantages. Longship scenes were shot at Luggala on August 16, 2012. Also, the Poulaphouca Reservoir was filmed in the Wicklow Mountains. Seventy-five percent of the first season's footage was shot outdoors. Additional background shots were taken in western Norway.

Three episodes were directed by Johan Renck and Ciaran Doyle. John Bartley was a cinematographer, Joan Bergin was a costume designer, Tom Conroy was a production designer, Trevor Morris was a composer, and Crux Vocal Ensemble, an Irish choir, directed by Paul McGough.

Season 2:

On June 11, 2013, Alexander Ludwig, who plays the role of the teenager Bjorn, and Linus Roache (playing King Ecbertof Wessex), were both announced as regulars in the series. The second series leaps in time. It ages the young Bjorn (Nathan O'Toole) into a more mature swordsman, as portrayed by Ludwig.

Ragnar has been absent from Bjorn's older brother for "a long time." Lagertha marries a powerful jarl who gives harsh guidance to Bjorn. Anna Astrom and Edvin Endre were both cast for the second season. Endre played the role of Erlendur (one of King Horik's sons).
